Yep. Human zoos were a thing. Not only in America, but in a lot of countries in Europe. Matter of fact, it was Europe that started the terrible exhibits back in the 1800s, then New York started having the “zoos” in the 20th century. Over 28 million white people would go to these “zoos” to see hundreds of black and indigenous people as a “major attraction”.

People who suffered in these zoos might still be alive today.

Do not let this be lost in history.

This is absolutely horrifying, and to make it even worse, this is the first time I’ve even heard of it. The levels of sugarcoating and erasure of racism in our history books is staggering.

do you want to know something?? I always wondered what the hell kind of hairstyle the Ancient Egyptians were trying to portray with depictions like these

and this

until I did my hair this morning and

oh

welp

you can take the noses off our statues but until you find a way to take Egypt out of Africa we’re still going to find ourselves

I’m reblogging this post without all the salty, racist commentary because I’m sick of looking at it. please spread this around again in its pure form for posterity.

What’s funny is that white people thought they were hats/crowns 😂

ESIUQRAM

Here’s a really good post about this.

And here’s some pictures of the Afar people, who still live on the horn of Africa today.

Cool, huh?

Beautiful

People thought it was Hats and Crowns? How could they not see hair?

The same reason archaeologists, upon finding a woman’s skeleton in the grave of a famous Roman gladiator, immediately wondered where the gladiator’s skeleton was: Old Straight White Man™ brand denial.

Same way they denied the Really Gay Egyptian Tomb, too. It’s kind of a Thing.

This post is amazing, I’m so glad it exists. I have learned.

There is so much greatness in this post and all white people care about is defending why they thought the depictions are hats. White people??? Why are you like this???

I’m salty as fuck that we were taught they were crowns at SCHOOL. For Christ sake.

Eva Longoria is everything

Yet she can’t even speak Spanish 😂😅😂😅😂

That’s pride alright lmfao

She don’t have to, but don’t talk all that shit if you don’t even learn your own culture #lame

you were saying @dabeatnik???

ummm

“When I was growing up, my parents spoke to each other in Spanish, but they didn’t speak to us in Spanish because they were told not to. In school we weren’t allowed to speak it.”

and also???

“… But America is the only country that promotes monolingualism. Here it’s English, English, English. Every other country makes their children learn a second language very early on. So as my political and social activism grew, I was like, ‘I really need to learn Spanish.’ So I did.“

idk how many people i’ve known growing up in texas whose parents speak fluent spanish but they don’t speak a lick solely because their parents were afraid or told not to teach their children. it’s unspeakably common and doesn’t in any way shape or form diminish someone’s claim to or pride in their heritage.

fuck that guy. you go eva.

lack of intergenerational language exchange is one of the leading causes of language death for endangered and indigenous languages because of this culture of shame attached to “lesser” coded languages so frankly if yr mocking people for not speaking their mother tongue without taking the colonial reasons for this into account, you’re an ignorant prick and you can go fuck yourself like

Was Scarlett Johansson not available?

Disgraceful. Hollywood wants to profit off the story of this man of color receiving the highest civilian honor of the time for his actions during Pearl Harbor while erasing his ethnicity. Kanahele is one of the few people to be so honored, let alone people of color. Hollywood has not learned *wtf*

Also, they’re making a movie about the Niihau Incident – I’m sure they’re not going to erase the people of Japanese heritage. I’m pretty dubious about a movie like this coming out right now during record high xenophobia when the incident that occurred is about first and second-gen Japanese Americans helping a downed Japanese national pilot – and then the incident was used as part of the justification for Japanese internment.

So of course they’re putting a white man against the Japanese while erasing Kanahele’s heritage – and probably his wife’s and his entire family’s and the folks’ on the island and so forth. Great, just lovely.
