Especially the first map…Ethiopia alone is unconquered.
Ethiopia was actually briefly occupied by Fascist Italy in the 1930s, but it largely resisted the earlier primary waves of European colonization.
The emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia, made a powerful and prophetic speech to the League of Nations (which condemned the Italian aggression but ultimately did nothing to stop it) in 1936 where he made the famous anti-fascist and anti-imperialist cautionary statement, “today us, tomorrow you.” And he was right, because not even a year later Nazi Germany started making territorial demands of its neighbors which eventually escalated to the massive bloodshed of World War 2, where Hitler tried to conquer almost all of Europe.
What’s really wild is that the native people literally told the Europeans “they walked” when asked how the statues were moved. The Europeans were like “lol these backwards heathens and their fairy tales guess it’s gonna always be a mystery!”
Maori told Europeans that kiore were native rats and no one believed them until DNA tests proved it
Roopkund Lake AKA “Skeleton Lake” in the Himalayas in India is eerie because it was discovered with hundreds of skeletal remains and for the life of them researchers couldn’t figure out what it was that killed them. For decades the “mystery” went unsolved.
Until they finally payed closer attention to local songs and legend that all essentially said “Yah the Goddess Nanda Devi got mad and sent huge heave stones down to kill them”. That was consistent with huge contusions found all on their neck and shoulders and the weather patterns of the area, which are prone to huge & inevitably deadly goddamn hailstones. https://www.facebook.com/atlasobscura/videos/10154065247212728/
Literally these legends were past down for over a thousand years and it still took researched 50 to “figure out” the “mystery”. 🙄
Adding to this, the Inuit communities in Nunavut KNEW where both the wrecks of the HMS Erebus and HMS Terror were literally the entire time but Europeans/white people didn’t even bother consulting them about either ship until like…last year.
“Inuit traditional knowledge was critical to the discovery of both ships, she pointed out, offering the Canadian government a powerful demonstration of what can be achieved when Inuit voices are included in the process.
In contrast, the tragic fate of the 129 men on the Franklin expedition hints at the high cost of marginalising those who best know the area and its history.
“If Inuit had been consulted 200 years ago and asked for their traditional knowledge – this is our backyard – those two wrecks would have been found, lives would have been saved. I’m confident of that,” she said. “But they believed their civilization was superior and that was their undoing.”
“Oh yeah, I heard a lot of stories about Terror, the ships, but I guess Parks Canada don’t listen to people,” Kogvik said. “They just ignore Inuit stories about the Terror ship.”
Schimnowski said the crew had also heard stories about people on the land seeing the silhouette of a masted ship at sunset.
“The community knew about this for many, many years. It’s hard for people to stop and actually listen … especially people from the South.”
Indigenous Australians have had stories about giant kangaroos and wombats for thousands of years, and European settlers just kinda assumed they were myths. Cut to more recently when evidence of megafauna was discovered, giant versions of Australian animals that died out 41 000 years ago.
Similarly, scientists have been stumped about how native Palm trees got to a valley in the middle of Australia, and it wasn’t until a few years ago that someone did DNA testing and concluded that seeds had been carried there from the north around 30 000 years ago… aaand someone pointed out that Indigenous people have had stories about gods from the north carrying the seeds to a valley in the central desert.
Reminder that in Africa people were performing successful cesarean sections and brain surgeries as early as 3,000 b.c.e while whites didn’t even think to wash they asses until hundreds of years later but Africa is always portrayed as some type of monolithic land of savages.
Oh.
I’m not exactly challenging you, but I want a source.
Whether or not a protest is “peaceful” is decided by the state, not the protestors.
There’s a reason the Women’s March wasn’t considered a riot, and it has everything to do with white privilege and nothing to do with how “well behaved” we were. Police show up to peaceful BLM protests already in riot gear all the time.
“The abuser’s problem is not that he responds inappropriately to conflict. His abusiveness is operating prior to the conflict: it usually creates the conflict, and it determines the shape the conflict takes.”

The man who proposed this bill, HB2120, is Rep. Bob Thorpe. His website can be found HERE. And you can contact him at 602.926.5219
The man who co-signed the bill is Rep. Mark Finchem. His website can be found HERE. And you can contact him at 602.926.3122
The bill has already received praise and support from other Arizona House republicans. HEREyou can find a list of all the members of the House along with their phone numbers and emails.
As someone who has had, and will continue, to face the repercussions of these bills, let me just break it down.
These bills have been introduced by white politicians who want to deny us our history and deny us the celebration of our heritage and art. The main reason they stopped these programs in high schools was because “it made white people look bad.” As a result of their fragility and non acceptance of literal goddamn history, we lost our ethnic studies programs.
This largely targeted Mexican-American classes and Native-American classes and our books were not allowed to be a part of the curriculum as well. Our state and many news outlets simply called this a “book ban,” but it was so much more than that. We were denied our history and our culture in the classroom because it made these white politicians feel sad. And this is the exact same excuse they’re giving out now that they want to extend it to Arizona colleges.
Rep. Bob Thorpe, who proposed this bill, speaks out against these classes and thinks the issues involving race is something of 100-200 years ago. And he’s also going after programs, events, and activities involving gender, religion, political affiliation, social class or other class. And his exact words on the subject is that these classes discriminate and that we should be able to “accurately discuss” these topics under his idea of what’s okay AKA erase history and ignore atrocities if white people are involved.
And again his main point is that these classes discriminate and that’s how he’s presenting it. He’s calling it an anti-discrimination bill and other Arizona legislators on his side support it specifically because of that wording. One even told the news that he hasn’t read the bill and doesn’t know the contents of the bill but he supports anything to do with anti-discrimination.
So spread this information because people MUST know what this really is and what has been happening in Arizona schools for years. They actively silence Black and brown voices and turn us into the enemy.
