This search for niche groups led Subaru to the 3rd rail of marketing: They discovered that lesbians loved their cars. Lesbians liked their dependability and size, and even the name “Subaru.” They were four times more likely than the average consumer to buy a Subaru. […] Subaru decided to launch an ad campaign focused on lesbian customers. It was such an unusual decision—and such a success—that it pushed gay and lesbian advertising from the fringes to the mainstream.
If you’ve ever wondered why people joke about lesbians driving Subarus, the reason is not just that lesbians like Subarus. It’s that Subaru cultivated its image as a car for lesbians—and did so at a time when few companies would embrace or even acknowledge their gay customers.
Okay wait a second. Werewolves are talked about in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child like they’re all bad and supporters of the dark arts. They go into hiding even more that they previously did in this story. They “have gone entirely underground.” So you’re telling me that literally nothing has evolved in terms of werewolf rights? Hermione Granger is the Minister for Magic and they’re still living as they were 20 years before.
Dolores Umbridge was a piece of shit for drafting anti-werewolf legislation and her discrimination against them was presented in a negative light. Not to mention that this shunning by the wizarding community made it nearly impossible for them to work and as a result, they lived in poverty. Like, the stereotype was that they couldn’t even be trusted in human form. Which we obviously knew wasn’t true and they were just as capable of being good or bad. But Hermione puts them entirely in the category of creatures who fought with Voldemort. Literally calling them “beasts,” and “allies of the darkness.”
Remus Lupin was a victim of this prejudice. He only got by financially thanks to James Potter. He could hardly find work and lost his job at Hogwarts because he knew parents would be outraged a werewolf was around their children. His fear of being a husband and father stem from the bigoted views in the wizarding community. And you’re telling me that it’s just about the same?
American Eagle’s body positive campaign for men was an April Fool’s “joke”. Not only that, but the models that participated were lied to and had no idea that this wasn’t real and was a “prank”.
This is exceptionally cruel. Fat men’s bodies are not a joke.
So many fat people have trauma around the “jokes” that thin people like to play on us.
Thin people think it’s hilarious to pretend that they are romantically attracted to a fat person or that they want to be friends with a fat person.
The punchline is- HA HA! You thought you were a person! But you’re not! LOL!
These “pranks” leave scars, making it hard for their fat victims to believe anyone could ever care about them. These scars last for years, a lifetime.
That is what this “joke” reminded me of. A deep well of trauma from being subjected to the cruelties of thin people.
Of humiliation and torment, over and over, for the sake of thin people’s “jokes”.
I will not ever shop at an American Eagle again.
I stand in solidarity with fat men and masculine people.
I AM SO ANGRY. SO SO SO SO SO ANGRY. BLACK MEN ARE ALREADY UNDERREPRESENTED IN MEDIA IN POSITIVE OR ANY ROLE AND YOU THINK IT IS OK TO DO THIS EVEN MORE? LIKE THIS MODEL HAD NO CLUE?????????? WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK?????????
He didn’t KNOW?! And they used him like that?! God I wish I shopped at American Eagle so I could never stop there again. How fucking cruel. FUCK American Eagle, fuck Aerie, fuck all involved who decided this was edgy or funny.
this is so fucked up
Yeah this is unbelievably goddamned vile and it’s genuinely shocking that anyone at any level thought this was okay, in this day and age.
The entire idea of the joke is viciously insulting to begin with.
The body positive campaigns going on for women right now are already just baby steps that revolve heavily around what most people would still call conventionally attractive models and someone still thought they were ~going too far~ I guess and needed to be “parodied.”
And not satisfied with how hateful and dehumanizing that entire concept is from top to fucking bottom, they decided they need to trick and exploit people for it to boot.
