NATIONAL SCIENTIST OF THE PHILIPPINES, FOUNDER OF THE FIRST FILIPINO PEDIATRIC SCHOOL AND THE FIRST WOMAN ACCEPTED TO HARVARD MEDICAL SCHOOLBECAUSE THEY DIDN’T REALIZE SHE WAS A WOMAN UNTIL SHE GOT THERE AND FOUND HERSELF ASSIGNED TO AN ALL-MALE DORM
And they couldn’t turn her away because 1) she was already there, she traveled so far, it wouldn’t have been right to send her back 2) her grades were, unsurprisingly, above and beyond and she was too good to turn away and 3) the scholarship was granted to her by the president of the Philippines, and y’all don’t say no to that without some international incident let’s be real
So she unwittingly became the first woman ever accepted into Harvard Med School (and possibly the first Asian ever enrolled? Though I haven’t confirmed this). She’s also since pioneered so many medical advancements in the Philippines that they can barely be counted, and she is by all accounts one of those amazing human beings that come rare in our lifetime. She was buried, and rightfully so, in the Libingan ng mga Bayani (Heroes’ Cemetery).
Mattel just introduced a game developer Barbie with the message, “You can be anything” — including a target for aggressive misogyny. Game developer Barbie has red hair, glasses, a tablet and a laptop. But some men are not having it. The comments about her appearance (and weight) are particularly abhorrent.
These men are sick.
I get tired of people arguing that sexism is dead when shit like this happens all the time.
I feel like Barbie knew exactly what they were doing creating this doll. I like to think they are just like BRING IT. ENJOY THE HUNDREDS OF FEMALE DEVELOPERS INSPIRED BY THIS DOLL IN 15 YEARS.
Personally I’d up the estimate of # of girls inspired over fifteen years from hundreds to “tens or hundreds of thousands.” They will sell a LOT of these toys, a lot of kids will play with them, and this will have a huge effect over time.
i had a moment today while watching a whiny shitlord complain about the injustice of new sci-fi media having more female leads, i suddenly felt the strangest sense of déjà vu. i couldn’t pintpoint it at first but then out of nowhere, it fucking dawned on me
This is the single greatest meme in the history of the Internet everyone can stop making memes now we don’t need any more ever again
I think I’ve already reblogged this but I don’t care it’s just pure gospel
I really don’t get why this GQ interview with Scott Eastwood is being presented in such a positive light. It’s like they’re trying to make him sound rugged-cool-alpha-man when he really just sounds like a violent asshole that is going to continue the cycle of abuse his father put him through.
“Clint Eastwood slammed his teenage son against a wall. He wrapped his sinewy hands around Scott’s throat. And then he punched him, square in the face.”
This is the story that is bringing in all the headlines but it’s being played off as peak good parenting rather than abuse. Scott recalls this incident as being “old school,” and “none of this new-age bullshit where you can’t even smack the kid because everyone’s afraid of being judged or whatever.” Uh yeah choking and punching your kid should warrant some judgement or whatever.
This is how the cycle continues, the child thinks this is how parenting should be, how a child will learn and then continues that method when they become parents. But how many of us don’t see this as good parenting? How many of us are completely scarred over the old school methods of parenting that our parents put us through? And the GQ article goes along with Scott’s beliefs. The very next line after he proclaims this is how parenting should be done the article praises Scott for being a miracle child in Hollywood for failing to be a “shitty person.” I’d beg to differ.
The next two paragraphs are about how he “would love nothing more,” than to knock complainers out and how he yells at his co-workers. But it’s all totally cool because he’s old school and he’s just acting like how men should be or something. That’s how this whole article is presented; the violence is never a problem because they can just write it off as having classic values and being raised by a traditional manly-man. This behavior isn’t seen as violent, instead he’s a breathe of fresh air in a world of new age pansy asses or whatever.
Like you can try to talk about how well adjusted Scott must be because of this old school style parenting but this interview shows me the complete opposite. He clearly has issues handling his emotions and I don’t think anyone who finds it acceptable to punch and choke children can be passed off as a good example for the “I was beat as a kid and turned out just fine,” argument.
HIDDEN FIGURES is the incredible untold story of Katherine G. Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe)—brilliant African-American women working at NASA, who served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, a stunning achievement that restored the nation’s confidence, turned around the Space Race, and galvanized the world. The visionary trio crossed all gender and race lines to inspire generations to dream big.
