Seriously though, I went to an all girls Christian school and whenever I tell people about it they think it was really strict and harsh and outdated and I’m like ??? No?? We were constantly taught about the importance of feminism and strong women. We studied more female authors in English than co-ed schools. We were all pissed when we didn’t get to learn about Cleopatra and when we learned about history women’s roles were so important to us. It was compulsory to learn about Marie Curie in science.
Women and girls who go to all female learning facilities learn so much about themselves and grow up so quickly and unashamedly. Girls who hear stories of other women who fight over boys and are constantly jealous of each other bond over the bizarre thought that any man is worth fighting over. Women who are separated from the patriarchy are enraged by it when they come into contact with it.We were taught to sit up straight with our legs crossed as we stared at a man across a table and know that we were just as capable and as powerful as he is. Because that is what a proper feminine young lady should do.

The bill, which passed by a vote of 238–183, codifies the Hyde Amendment, a rule passed in 1976 that prohibits any taxpayer money from being used to fund abortions. What H.R. 7 will do, in effect, is cut off taxpayer funding to insurance plans that choose to cover abortion, even though those funds have been prohibited for use on abortion care ever since the Hyde Amendment was passed four decades ago. That’s why the bill’s title, “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion and Abortion Insurance Full Disclosure Act of 2017,” is misleading — it’s already illegal in the United States for federal tax dollars to be used to fund abortions.
H.R. 7 also takes the Hyde Amendment a bit farther and would prohibit abortion coverage from being offered in multi-state health insurance plans created under the Affordable Care Act. According to a statement released by the Center for Reproductive Rights, the bill would cause millions of American women to lose insurance coverage for abortion.

guess what? this affects like, every insurance ever. even those of us who have good insurance like tricare. the hyde amendment already makes it impossible to get abortions in any tax-funded facility (like u.s. military treatment facilities anywhere in the world) UNLESS you can prove an imminent threat to the pregnant person’s life. now idk what kind of exceptions we are talking about (if any) with h.r. 7., but you really have to think about what sorts of reasons people have abortions. they’re not always choice or convenience (most of you know this but it bears repeating for the people in the back) but it’s okay if that is why you choose one. but sometimes there are time-sensitive emergencies and even medical professionals don’t treat them as such.
this means termination of ectopic pregnancies may not be covered until something ruptures, which could kill you pretty damned fast. i had to wait two days for blood work to verify that i was at risk with high enough hormone levels before my insurance would allow me to get an abortion. another friend of mine was forced to carry her dead fetus because induction is considered abortion. she ended up getting a severe infection that threatened her life and eventually caused her to go into labor where she delivered a baby she already knew was dead. but this took weeks. and if you’re stationed in a country that outlaws abortion, you have absolutely no recourse unless you can get leave and afford to fly to another country (or find unsafe means like the marine who used the cleaning rod for her weapon on herself) .
the hyde amendment on its own is terrible and scary and puts lives at risk. this spreads this shitshow around to the rest of y’all who may have had coverage for these things up until now, and basically screws all of us over and threatens lives.

The Netherlands ‘counters’ Trump with international abortion fund
“The Dutch Government is planning to launch an international fund to finance access to birth control and abortion in developing countries, in order to fill the gap left after the Trump administration announced it would no longer fund any overseas aid organisations which discussed abortion.
“Banning abortions does not result in fewer abortions,” Dutch Trade and Development Minister Lilianne Ploumen said, according to Dutch news website NOS. “It leads to more irresponsible practices in back rooms and more maternal deaths.”
The World Health Organisation estimates that 22 million women experience unsafe abortions every year, the vast majority of whom are in developing countries. A 2008 report from the organisation estimated that nearly 50,000 women die from complications in such procedures annually.
Minister Ploumen said that the Trump administration’s decision risked undermining recent advances in women’s health.
“We must not let this happen,” she said.
“We need to compensate for this financial blow as much as possible, with a broad-based fund, where governments, businesses and civil society organizations can donate to – so that women can remain in control of their own bodies.”

It really seriously bothers me when I see posts referring to “Princess Leia” and then people reblog them to say “GENERAL****” as though this is an important correction. As though Leia’s identity as a princess is either somehow inherently bad or is in anyway inferior to her position as a general.
I don’t think people understand that Leia had MORE POWER as a princess than she does as a general.
First of all, Leia as a princess was never some damsel in distress, sitting pretty, waiting for her Prince Charming type of situation. As Princess of Alderaan, Leia was had the advantage of extensive cultural and diplomatic training and used her position and connections and political savvy to become a Senator and therefore a SPY, looking out for the interests not only of her Alderaanian subjects but also of the entire galaxy. Her title of Princess is crucial in regards to her character, even now just reading the new CANON comics, insofar as Alderaan is an integral aspect of who she is–not only an Alderaanian, but the person who felt RESPONSIBLE for the safety of the planet.
Then after her home planet was obliterated right before her eyes, she continued on to use her knowledge and skills and political leverage–none of which she would have had if she hadn’t been adopted into a royal house–to aid the rebellion, and her title as “princess” allowed her to become a symbol of resistance and rebellion against tyranny across the entire galaxy. She was a SPY PRINCESS, A WARRIOR PRINCESS, A POLITICAL PRINCESS, and every other kind of princess you could imagine. Leia as a princess is badass, and not something to be snidely dismissed with ignorant assertions that being a general is better and more “feminist” just because it’s a title traditionally held by men.
In reality, the situation is entirely the reverse. Leia has no authority as a General other than over her own troops in a resistance that’s not even fully supported by the government that Leia herself helped to establish AS A PRINCESS. The New Republic didn’t take Leia’s warnings about the First Order seriously and LOOK WHERE THAT LANDED THEM. And the sway and renown that is still shown to Leia in the new canon is STILL linked to her royal status, not just because she was a princess but because of what she DID as a princess. That’s why we get the line “well to me she’s royalty.”
Disney slapped the title of General on Leia hoping that fans would rally to this feminist progress while at the same time propagating the idea that she couldn’t possibly have been a present mother or wife while also succeeding in a political career, ignoring her OT character arc, destroying her family for no other reason than to create Kylo Ren, and undermined her credibility in the new system. I don’t see any feminism in those regressions.
Does Leia deserve to be a general? Yes, of course. But can we please stop acting like this is some kind of upgrade? Being a Princess was central to Leia’s character, and NEVER was this fact in any way a disadvantage to her. She was both graceful and polished and vulnerable and strong and determined and lethal. She was the “strong female character” that girls could look up to, and I personally see nothing to turn your nose up about fierce, intelligent, brave PRINCESS Leia Organa.

Meanwhile, South Bend IN is currently experiencing a flood where a visit would not be a negative impact the resources, but a photo op in Baton Rouge is more important somehow.

- Two more Breitbart staffers have joined the Trump administration, joining Steve Bannon. Julia Hahn specifically covered immigration on the website and is aggressively anti-immigration. Sebastian Gorka was the website’s national security editor and served as a policy consultant on Trump’s campaign. VDare, a white nationalist website who is listed on the SLCP extremist list, has praised Hahn’s anti-immigration work in the past. (source)
- A day after reinstating the global gag rule, which removes all US funding from foreign aid groups if they counsel patients on abortion (source), the House of Representatives passed a funding ban on abortion. The bill will ban anyone in the US from receiving federal financial assistance for abortion. This means programs like Medicaid and those who purchased insurance through the Affordable Care Act, meaning that abortions will be even harder to get for lower income women. (source)
- Badlands National Park’s official Twitter posted a ton of tweets about climate change. This went against the current social media blackout order that the Trump administration has enforced on the EPA, Department of Interior, and the Department of Agriculture meaning no news releases, blog posts, or social media updates allowed. The tweets have “mysteriously” been deleted, no further information known. (source)
- In preparation to “drastically reshape” the Environmental Protection Agency, the Trump administration has put a freeze on all EPA grants to local and state communities. The EPA has received no notice on how long the freeze will last, and this goes beyond the hiring freeze that all federal government (minus new political appointees) is facing. (source)
- Trump signed two executive orders to revive the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline and Keystone Pipeline. Trump also signed an executive order to expedite environmental project reviews, meaning they won’t have to go through the same regulatory process as before. (source)
- Trump announced that his Supreme Court Justice pick will be announced next week, the shortlist includes Neil Gorsuch, Thomas Hardiman, and William Pryor. Gorsuch is against abortion, opposes the ACA’s birth control mandate and calls it “unconstitutional.” Hardiman does not believe citizens should have the right to tape police wrongdoing. And Pryor has called Roe v. Wade the “worst abomination in the history of constitutional law.” Pryor also urged the Supreme Court to uphold laws banning sodomy – linking consensual activity between men to bestiality, incest, and pedophilia. - Trump’s pick for Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos, will not have to go through a second hearing. The senate committee will vote on her nomination on January 31st. (source)
- Trump is (again) claiming that millions of people voted illegally, and that he would have also won the popular vote if not for this. This is still a baseless claim, and WH press secretary, Sean Spicer told the press today that Trump believes “people voting illegally during the campaign and continues to maintain that belief based on studies and evidence people have brought to him.” They still have provided no evidence (and refuse to) and so far no evidence coming from elsewhere supporting this exists. Y’all, it’s only Day 1, and things are looking GRAVE AF. Today Trump re-instated a law that will kill thousands of women – and I am not exaggerating here. He did this 2 DAYS after the women’s march, surrounded by a group of smirking old dudes. Lovely. The policy is called the “Global Gag Rule”.
Here’s what you need to know:
The Global Gag Rule bans health organizations around the world from receiving US funding if they so much as *mention* abortion. The organizations are also banned from providing abortion services – even though other funding sources, like donations, are used to pay for them. (The Helms Amendment bans the use of US funds for abortion abroad.) The GGR is not a budget cut, it is a special stipulation for funding targeting reproductive health organizations specifically.
As you might imagine, this policy puts international health centers in a very difficult position. They either lose funding for things like STI screenings and birth control, or they leave patients seeking an abortion to do it on their own.
We saw the devastating impact of this policy when President Bush signed it into effect in 2001. Take Ethiopia, where unsafe abortion is the second-leading cause of death (after HIV/AIDS). Organizations there decided they could not turn women away, and thusly experienced a massive birth control supply crisis as punishment. 16 other countries also saw US donations of contraceptives and condoms abruptly cut off.
I know it’s not their thing, but the GOP desperately needs to put on their thinking caps here. What happens when you cut off birth control access? Oh yes! More people get pregnant! And what happens when you cut off safe access to abortion services? Oh, right. People die. Every year 50,000 women die from a lack of access to safe abortion. The last time the GGR went into effect, the abortion rate INCREASED. There are literally 90 katrillion studies showing that banning abortion *does not stop abortion from happening*, it just means they happen in dangerous conditions. That’s a fact. And, at least to this chick, facts still matter.
Then there are the effects that GGR has on HIV/AIDS prevention efforts. In some of the communities affected by the rule, HIV infects as many as 1 in 4 people.
Overall, this is a law that has well documented effects of death and destruction. On what fking planet is this policy “pro life”? I’m pissed, naturally. It’s unbelievable (well, not really) that our government would put women around the world in this much danger FOR LITERALLY NO REASON. Seriously – WTF?? I will not stand for it, and I hope you’ll join me in sending a vocal NOPE to our leaders.
This week, Senator Gillibrand and Senator Shaheen are introducing bi-partisan legislation to permanently REPEAL the Global Gag Rule. They are calling it “HER Act”. It’s unclear to me what is possible given that we have a 1-party government now, but given that lives are on the line, I am going to do what I can to fight back at every turn.
