Notice how Shan Yu doesn’t even question it or make a comment about “BUT YOU’RE A GIRL” he just instantly goes into a “I’LL TEACH YOU TO KILL MY MEN AND STEAL MY VICTORY” rage and I think about this a lot sometimes
((Well that might have to do with the fact that he’s a Hun. Women among the Huns had higher status than their Chinese counterparts and even some of their own men. Women were free to hunt and fight along side of the men, could choose their own husbands and divorce him if she choose to. There were even records of clans being led by women leaders. So for Shan Yu Mulan is just another soldier))
thank you, history side of tumblr.
He also might not have been able to see very well, due to whatever horrible disease has taken hold in his eyeballs.
Pretty serious Wilson’s Disease judging by the copper buildup in in irises, and apparent melanocytosis localized to his sclera.
I kind of wish disney’s ~weird period~ had lasted longer. Like all of a sudden we were getting these films like lilo & stitch and Atlantis and the emperor’s new groove and treasure planet and they were so fun and DIFFERENT. Just thinking about what the pitches for those movies had to have been like is so surreal?? A little blue criminal alien crash lands on a Hawaiian island and gets adopted by two sisters dealing with social services that teach him about the value of family. An Inca emperor gets turned into a llama and john goodman helps him get back to his palace and one of the bad guys talks to squirrels. Treasure island but in SPACE. Like, on the surface, the premise for these films seem so random but they all TOTALLY WORKED IN REALLY GREAT WAYS??? idk I just really miss that early 2000s spark of offbeat creativity in Disney’s timeline.
OK THAT’S THE LAST STRAW I’M KINKSHAMING DISNEY. NEVERY DID I THINK THT DISNEY OF ALL THINGS WOULD BE SOMETHING I’D HAVE TO KINKSHAME. FUCKING DISNEY. THEY KNOWS WHHAT THEY’RE DOING THEY KNOW THEY’RE MAKIN PEOPLE FURFUCKERS THROUGH A KIDS MOVIE AND THEY KNOW IT THEY PUT BARA TIGERS ININ NOTHING BUT TIGHT SPARKLY UNDERWAER AND GLITTER IN THEIR FUR AND MAKE THEM DANCE SUGGESTIVELY I’M SO DONE I’M BECOMING A CHRISTIAN MUM
If you listen to the end of tangled…. Rapunzel and Eugene didnt get married until several years later
same with Aladdin and jasmine!
And Belle was trapped in that castle for months with Beast; I’m pretty sure at least a year.
Also Tiana and her prince were together as frogs for an indeterminate length of time before they married.
Tumblr gets schooled by the Disney fandom
Also let’s not forget Aurora was betrothed (which uhh, was a thing and some places still is).
Cinderella had to be locked in her home away from her prince whilst she knew he was looking for her.
I love how no one is trying to defend Ariel and Snow.
When Ariel was permanently turned back into a human by her father, we don’t know how much time passed between that day and their wedding.
Snow was under the sleeping curse for at least half a year. Remember the lovely commentary animated films used to do? At the end of the film, it states, “The Prince, who had searched far and wide, heard of the maiden who slept in the glass coffin.” Additionally, it shows changes in season. And finally we don’t even see a marriage between The Prince and Snow.
I love this fandom
🙌👏
So really, Anna is the only princess who tries to marry a prince right away
I am so proud of everyone who commented on this
This post is priceless. Way to go, Disnerds!
And wait, WTF. Why are the princesses the targets of derision here? Prince Phillip was ready to marry Aurora after just running into her in the forest. And then he risked his life and fought a dragon. He didn’t even know her real name, he thought she was some random peasant from the woods and he was ready to walk away from his kingdom. Why isn’t he on trial here?
Prince Charming, same thing. He’d met Snow White before, but he didn’t know she was the maiden he was looking for. He literally heard about some dead girl in the woods and was like, “I must have her for my bride.” We’re going to blame that on Snow White? She was unconscious. And aside from singing one song about him, she was kind of wrapped up in her own thing with her dwarf friends.
Jasmine didn’t even want to get married at all for like 90% of the movie. Aladdin pursued her, going so far as to completely overhaul his image to impress her.
Cinderella didn’t ever say she wanted to get married, either. Her Prince dancd with her once, then tracked her down by her shoe size. Again, he was the one who wanted to get married. She kind of just went back to her regular life with a bittersweet memory.
WTF is up with blaming princesses for the princes’ bad judgment?
Frollo and Mother Gothel convince Quasimodo and Rapunzel that their lives are dependent on them. The two villains claim the outside world is a terrible place even though they know this is not true. They also constantly emotionally abuse their victims by implying their worthlessness and destroying their self-esteems. Quasimodo and Rapunzel sympathize with their captors and even believe their captors are protecting them and treating them with kindness. However, both captors are merely using and manipulating their victims for their own selfish purposes.
Belle does not sympathize with the Beast when she is treated poorly. She becomes angry and leaves the castle, only returning by her own wish so that the Beast (who saves her) does not freeze to death. She does not respond nicely towards the Beast until he treats her with respect. In this situation, Belle has control and is not manipulated into feeling for the Beast, nor does the Beast treat her disrespectfully after the first night. While the Beast does have an underlying motive as to keeping Belle in his castle, he abandons this idea and sets her free to make her happy. If anything, this story is a case of Lima Syndrome where the captor starts to sympathize with the victim.
Check out this post which refocuses the purpose of Beauty and the Beast from merely (and wrongly) being about Stockholm Syndrome to it’s original purpose.
FUCKING FINALLY
I don’t usually reblog stuff like this, but Beauty and the Beast is my favorite movie and I’d like to have this on my page!
this is actually a very good analysis. I take back all the times I’ve called Beauty and the Beast a ‘stockholm syndrome’ romance.
I didn’t even know about any of this until I read it here.
THANK YOU THANK YOU
thank youuuuuuu
Another difference too is that the Beast never pretends that this is for Belle’s own good or anything like that. He makes it very clear that this a trade for her father, and that she is taking on her father’s punishment for trespassing. I’m not saying locking Maurice up in the first place was a good thing (obviously not) but there is no trickery here, and when the Beast finally embraces the goodness inside of him he freely lets Belle go even knowing that to keep her would benefit himself. He realizes how selfish and wrong that would be, unlike the actual villains on this list.
Frollo appoints himself as Quasimodo’s guardian, Gothel convinces Rapunzel she is actually her real mother (which honestly makes her one of the most groundbreaking Disney villains to date imo, showing children that just because someone is in the ultimate authority over them doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be questioned; unfortunately in this world, not all parents are automatically “good guys”), but the Beast is Belle’s captor until he lets her kindness start to transform him. (And also take note: Beast changes because he wants to change, Belle is who shows him how.)
