DC Comics is relaunching the cartoon cat Snagglepuss as a “gay Southern Gothic playwright,” following the Hanna-Barbera reboots that gave us post-apocalyptic Wacky Races and The Flintstones as a dark political satire.
Snagglepuss isn’t as well-known as some Hanna-Barbera cartoons like Scooby-Doo or The Smurfs, so you’d be forgiven for mistaking him for the Pink Panther. He’s a pink mountain lion who aspires to be a stage actor, with a camp, lisping voice provided by Bert Lehr—the cowardly lion from The Wizard of Oz.
The upcoming comic takes place in the New York theater scene of the 1950s, with Snagglepuss going up against the House Committee on Un-American Activities.
SERIOUSLY THOUGH SHE WAS MY FAVORITE BATMAN VILLAIN
Her physical condition didn’t allow her to age
No one took her seriously as an actress
And even when she was trying to get into a happy romantic relationship (albeit with another villain) he still couldn’t take her seriously as a consenting, sexually active and romantically interested adult
That’s a lot of blows to someone’s psyche
and Babydoll is both a sympathetic villain and a formidable one
I remember this episode fucked me up a a kid.
And man, do I wish we could see this Batman again: the Batman that consoles his villains, because the majority (if not all) of them are mentally ill people. And Batman knows this and wants them healthy again, not punished and GOD definitely not dead.
Baby Doll is so underrated as a Batman villain
but her episode was perfect
Batman: The Animated Series
The story of one fucked up, traumatized little boy, doing his best to help other fucked up traumatized people.
The Batman that cares about the inmates is my favorite. He doesn’t put up with their shit, but he does try to reach out here and there and he’s as human as he can be to them.
When Harley was re-institutionalized, he got her that dress she wanted.
In the comics based on B:tAS, there was a time during Christmas that there was snow and it was Mr. Freeze’s fault, and he was making it snow because Christmas was his anniversary with Nora and she LOVED it when it snowed on Christmas, so Batman let him finish mourning before calmly taking him back to Arkham.
He never, ever gives up on Harvey possibly recovering.
Sure, Batman is going to throw punches and do what it takes to take these guys down when they’re hurting or threatening people. And he’s not going be a complete bleeding heart; he has to protect the innocent. He’s going to take them down and take them back to Arkham, but it doesn’t mean he’s incapable of being a bit human to the ones who deserve it.
Batman needs become human again
Because it needs to be here:
Remember that time a young girl with near god-like psychic powers threatened to destroy reality and the only one that could stop her was Batman because he had a previous encounter with her and was tasked with killing her to restore reality.
But instead, Batman sat with her on a swing and kept her company as the girl’s psychic powers slowly killed her.
You know what though, yeah everyone is going to be Harley Quinn but she RESONATES with a lot of people. She’s fun, she’s out there, she has a cool aesthetic, she’s sexy, she’s loud, she owns it, she’s SMART, she’s dangerous, but most importantly she’s different! She’s part of nerd culture! She’s not simply a “sexy cat” or “sexy vampire”, not that there is anything wrong with that, but women are clearly aching for more cool characters like Harley Quinn to dress up as. Because let’s be real, if there was an actual huge selection of readily available popular cool characters to play as, not everyone would be Harley Quinn this year. And that’s not women’s fault.
Harley Quinn is also a cute, easy costume to put together.
this is the visual representation of the “i’m not like other girls” mentality
every damn halloween i see about 20 batmans per year. i don’t see anyone making fun of them tho
People are shitting on women for dressing up as a character who was manipulated and destroyed by a man, only to escape the abuse, cut all ties with him, and become a more powerful version of herself in her own right. Gosh, I wonder why that costume would be popular and/or appealing to women.
Also Romeo and Juliet are a couple that killed themselves.
Don’t aim for fictional relationships
Aim for a real one.
Harley’s love for the Joker and her willingness to tolerate his abuse was always very deliberately presented to be deeply unhealthy and tragic:
The Joker is not her love interest – he is her origin story. He is what formed her and made her the person she is today – but he is NOT her love interest, he is her abuser.
And in later arcs, she has left him behind for good:
She is now in a happy polyamorous relationship with Poison Ivy and a new character, Mason.
Harley Quinn has grown so much over the years, and I am really proud of her as a character and think she showed so much strength to grow past her obsession with the Joker and become her own woman, totally true to herself and refusing to have her narrative revolve around someone else’s life.
So if you look up to Harley Quinn and see yourself in her, I think that’s great, but Harley Quinn isn’t amazing because she’s obsessed with the Joker, Harley Quinn is amazing because Harleen Quinzel is amazing.
