Tonight, I was at the grocery store doing a little last minute shopping when I saw this young girl (maybe middle school?) trying to corral her two younger sisters while trying to find a pan. She was saying how they had to hurry. I thought “Okay, that’s legit. Parent probably just has somewhere to be.” But THEN she started pacing a little at the end of the aisle and her face was covered in poorly concealed anxiety and I heard her tell her sisters as she started walking away, “Dad’s gonna be so mad.” And that was it for me.
I KNOW that feeling. I wasn’t the older sibling, but I was the “responsible one” and I know all too well the feeling of knowing your parent was going to get angry at you for not getting the right thing, or spending too much money, or taking too long. It’s a horrible feeling and it makes shopping so much more difficult because the enormity of choices are impossible to choose between, and the aisles are too big, and there are too many people pushing past you. So I went over to her and her siblings and asked what kind of pan she was looking for and then told her exactly where they were. Her face just lit up and she told me “thank you so much, you’re so nice!” As she walked away she turned back around and wished me a Happy Thanksgiving in just the most cheerful voice and obviously I returned the sentiment.
Take it easy on the kids in your life, both immediate and peripheral. Offer them help, give them guidance, pay attention to how they seem like they’re doing. Adults don’t make themselves available to children. They treat them like flies they’d like to swat. Let’s change that. It’s important they know there are people that WILL help them, so that maybe, eventually, they’ll ask for help themselves. I never did. This girl probably wouldn’t have either.

Didn’t quizilla have purges before finally shutting down? And I know basically every vidding home hot destroyed, repeatedly taking out the entire history of vidding online.

Well, not specifically. Journalfen failed completely and has never come back. FW was on Journalfen, so while you can see some entries on the Wayback machine, I think (?), the long comment threads aren’t archived.

Well, this would be why: we sincerely believed in the internet values of a decade or two ago, which involved owning our own servers if we wanted to see our projects remain stable, in the long term, online.
Worth mentioning: Yahoo purchased GeoCities, and was behind the decision to shut all those sites down.
Yahoo’s incompetence destroyed Delicious.

People just… completely forget. I was there for all of the bans on fanfiction.net. You don’t know panic until you go to log in one morning and find out a bunch of your works have been deleted, gone forever, because some asshole arbitrarily decided that they wanted to ban something.

Yep that’s right. Even Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas was directed by Henry Selick. Though Burton wrote the poem and created the characters in which Nightmare was based he didn’t have much interaction with the project beyond that. At the time he had already signed off to direct the film Batman Returns and did not want to be involved with the “painstakingly slow process of stop-motion animation.”
Looks like it was a trick quiz. But now you know Henry Selick, whom people rarely know of is responsible for many of the most well known stop-motion animated films. The more you know!

You guys don’t understand, Henry Selick was so happy and so incredibly nice and grateful that there was a festival solely dedicated to the art of Stop Motion and that he was an invited guest. He was treated like a superstar in his craft, and he was absolutely surprised.
All stop motion animators were actually. So please please please, appreciate this guy and his hard work in his key role at keeping stopmotion animation alive and well today.
