Republicans would love to disassemble the USPS. Make it private for their cronies. Bush made it law that the USPS has to have 75 years on pension contributions, all in an attempt to weaken their profits. Perfect example of Republicans being anti-veteran and anti-Constitution.
‘Pension contributions’ means that the USPS is required to have the next 75 years of payments to their present and future retirees–people who are still working and may be doing so for another 40 years–on hand, right now. That money has to be available and set aside before the USPS is allowed to spend a dime on wages and actual operational expenses. No other company, no other government agency, in the entirely of the US is forced to handle their finances this way. And it’s not because of their sheer number of employees, because the largest employer in the US is Walmart. But they don’t have to have that huge 75-year fund up front every year, to prove they can provide for their employees.
Whenever you’re outraged about the price of stamps going up again, remember that this is why.

The price of stamps is actually GOING DOWN.
Not because they’re so successful that they can cut prices, but because even with all the BS above, they were STILL FUNCTIONING, so their regulator, the Postal Regulatory Commission, demanded a price cut.
Because conservatives want to privatize postal service.
Which they can’t.
Unless they amend the Constitution.
And that’ll be real fun. Because nothing solves your grandma not getting the meds she needs like making her mail order them and pay FedEx and extra $20 to deliver them.
Which will be delivered by the USPS ANYWAYS, because they do Last Mile service for FedEx and UPS, particularly in rural areas.
And is effing slower than hell, where USPS all the way is quicker.
