Here’s the kicker;

This tourist and her son were staying in this woman’s house for free. That’s a pretty common arrangement apparently, where the tourist agrees to spread their bedroll under a particular person’s roof, and in exchange the tourist is obliged to purchase their food and drink from their host.

It’s a remote area and everything must carried in, so foodstuffs are rather expensive. The point of the whole arrangement is to offset the cost of bringing this stuff in, so what this arrogant, ignorant Englishwoman was doing wasn’t merely trying to save a few cents on a one dollar cup of tea.

She was reneging on a prior agreement, insulting her hosts, and unwittingly pulling food from her host family’s mouths.
