So we’re just redoing the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in 2017. Capitalism never leaves the 19th century *libertarian voice* and I think that’s efficient

Libertarians will blame it on the government, because if the government hadn’t essentially sanctioned it, “”“"real”“”“” capitalists would have prevented this
The apartment dwellers cared about the issue. They sought out help. They rallied for safer conditions, did everything libertarians insist will happen if a free market property owner fucks up. And they still died.
Almost as if despite having unlivable conditions, they don’t have the option to move elsewhere. Almost as if wealthy landowners are aware of the fact and use it to their advantage. Almost as if libertarians are wrong about a free market helping the poor and not mainly the rich.
No worries though, there was enough government collusion to say this doesn’t count, just like every instance of capitalism murdering people.

This is very important, it’s not capitalists who improve living conditions. It’s working class people. Then politicians take the credit.

It would’ve been $6,500 to put on fire-resistant material. They spent $11,000,000 on refurbishing the building – and put the cladding on it to “improve the view” of the rich neighbors.

  • The Times also digs into the building’s cladding, which has been the subject of controversy in the wake of the fire. It reports the building was in 2015-2016 refurbished at a cost of $11 million, which involved the application of aluminium panels made by US-based Reynobond to the exterior. A Reynobond sales rep tells the paper the version used on the building has a flammable plastic (polyethylene) core and is banned on any building over 40 feet tall in the US because of the potential fire hazard. By the Times’ math, the cost of outfitting the building in the fire-resistant version would have tacked $6,500 onto the renovation cost.
  • Why was the cladding added? Per planning documents seen by the Independent, for insulation, but also to “improve [the tower’s] appearance especially when viewed from the surrounding area.”

Wow, for once the US is the one with the life-saving regulation.

You know what pisses me off about this the most though? There was an act that was meant to go forwards a few years ago to prevent shit like this happening, and the tories voted against it because they want the money from big businesses – aka their rich supporters.

There was supposed to be a fire safety regulation that made sprinklers complusory, but the tories voted no because it would cost more.

We had stronger regulations like the ones in the US, but Margaret fucking Thatcher got rid of them

I hate the tories even more for this. This could have been prevented and they ignored several pleas from the residents all because they wanted to line their pockets. Fuck the tories and fuck capitalism for making them so bloody selfish.
